United Airlines Launches Flights to Dominica

United Airlines is set to make history by launching the first-ever non-stop flights from the United States to Dominica, a lesser-known Caribbean gem. Starting February 2025, the airline will operate weekly flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM) in Dominica.

This new route marks a significant milestone for Dominica, often called the “Nature Island” of the Caribbean. Known for its lush rainforests, hot springs, and the world’s second-largest boiling lake, Dominica has long been a hidden treasure for eco-tourists and adventure seekers. However, its lack of direct flights from major markets has kept it off the radar for many travelers.

United’s decision to launch this route comes as part of its strategy to expand its Caribbean network and cater to the growing demand for off-the-beaten-path destinations. The airline will use its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft for the route, offering both economy and premium cabin options.

For Dominica, this new air link represents a major boost to its tourism industry. The country has been investing heavily in sustainable tourism infrastructure, including eco-lodges and hiking trails, positioning itself as an alternative to the more commercialized Caribbean destinations.

However, the introduction of direct flights also raises concerns about preserving Dominica’s unspoiled nature. Local authorities and environmental groups are working to ensure that increased tourism doesn’t come at the cost of the island’s natural beauty.

Travelers planning to visit Dominica should be prepared for a different kind of Caribbean experience. Instead of all-inclusive resorts and crowded beaches, they’ll find rainforest hikes, whale watching opportunities, and chances to interact with the indigenous Kalinago people.

While United’s new route will make getting to Dominica easier, visitors should still expect a more rugged adventure than on other Caribbean islands. Pack your hiking boots alongside your swimsuit, and don’t forget to bring a sense of adventure – and maybe a raincoat or two!
